Before the web, I designed for print. I worked at Northwestern's Student Publishing Company as an editor and photographer at the advent of the desktop publishing revolution. After graduating and starting a teaching career, I still wanted to try my hand at publishing.
From 1995 to 1996, a childhood friend and I founded and produced Kalayaan, a monthly news magazine for San Diego's Filipino American community.
To set us apart from other newspapers in the Filipino-American community, we chose to produce Kalayaan in tabloid format. As an added bonus, the format offered more options for layout creativity.
